What it is: A projector that fits in a purse or briefcase. The 14.4-ounce projector measures 3.6 by 4.4 by 1.6 inches. It projects a square image ranging from 15 to 60 inches across, with a maximum distance of 81/2 feet. The 100-lumen, LED light source offers 10,000 hours of life. IBM Sees Visions of Holographic Cellphones Within 5 Years

ibmIBM predicts that holographic cellphone conversations, in which users will view one another’s image via 3D projector, will be a reality in five years. While the possibility has fired up imaginations, it’s also raised some practical questions, including how power-efficient such a technology would be. But IBM has something to say about the future of battery power as well.

Pico Projector in iPhone 5? Don’t Count On It

apple-logoSpeculating on future Apple gear is always fun, and Friday’s rumor is intriguing (if highly unlikely). A series of Friday blogospheric musings are pondering whether Apple might add a pico projector to the next-generation iPhone (a.k.a. iPhone 5).

A pico projector, also known as pocket or handheld projector, projects images onto a nearby surface, such as a wall or desktop. It’s a developing  technology, one that may play a major role in future smartphones, although today it’s strictly the stuff of blue-sky demos. (more…)

Lessons in 3D promise students entry into new worlds

Pupils-at-the-Abbey-schoolAll eyes and shades: pupils at the Abbey school, Reading, take part in a pilot scheme exploring the use of 3D in the curriculum.

Last year’s launch of the sci-fi movie, Avatar, with the future prospect of “re-versioned” Star Wars episodes and a new Jurassic Park with dinosaurs “leaping” into the auditorium, has moved 3D in local cinemas. (more…)
